PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION

When the ACMS elected me to become Chairman of the Publications Committee, I had little idea either of what to expect or of the extent of the work involved in the production of a book.

Major Loudoun Macleod had undertaken the task of editing and updating the original Section Four produced by Alick Morrison, and, although he suffered constantly during the preparation of this volume, he maintained a keen and continuing involvement until he died. Unfortunately he did not live to see the final product but the work in its present form is a fitting memorial to his efforts, his interest in the Clan and in the Cenealogy of his family, of which he was very proud.

In an attempt to ensure that this edition of this important section of the Genealogy incorporated as much information as could be gleaned from the many members of the Clan who have an interest in their origins, copies of the first drafts were circulated to Clan Societies world-wide.

From the replies received, it has become apparent that there are many MacLeods who have gathered much information on their own ancestry but who, for lack of records or lack of facilities for further research, have been unable to connect their lines to any of the published genealogies. There appears to be a requirement for copies of all such work to be held at some central place, so that a future genealogist with time and money to spare can either compile new sections or enlarge the existing ones.

The first edition of Section 4 contained much information about families descended through a female line from the MacLeods of Lewis and Raasay.

Early in the compiling of this revision, it was decided to limit the work to MacLeods belonging to the Siol Torcaill a consequence of which has been the removal of the original two appendices. The information contained in the original Appendix II should be incorporated in a future edition of MGC Section III, and the information contained in the original Appendix I, which details the descendants of Torquil Conanach's daughters is mostly available in published accounts of the families into which the daughters married.

The new Appendix I is confined to listing only Torquil Conanach's children and their marriages, although the genealogical chart for the MacKenzies of Tarbat and the Earls of Cromartie has been retained.

Not only the appendices were affected, the main text contained accounts of many families whose descent from the Siol Torcaill was also through a female line. Most of these have been omitted, exceptions being made forsome families of recent descent, and in particular, families descended

from those daughters of John XI of Raasay about whose marriage prospects Boswell expressed concern. Boswell need not have worried; all ten daughters made good marriages.

Both Alick Morrison and Loudoun Macleod have given acknowledgements in their introductions but I would like to acknowledge the invaluable help which I have received from Bill Danpure, who has typed, re-typed and re-typed again the whole of this production to enable it to be presented in its present form. My son Andrew has also been of great help in reading and checking the drafts and in compiling the lists of abbreviations and references. In addition I acknowledge the help of Hamish MacLeod of Bearsden for his work on the MacLeods of Westerdale.

I also acknowledge the work of the gentleman (who wishes to remain anonymous) who re-wrote the chapter on the MacLeods of Lewis in order to bring it more into line with modern scholarly opinion.
